Wendy Miller
Even before the Global pandemic, we had noticed that something needed to change in our approach to supporting children's mental health. In the systems of Health and Education, that we are working in, we noticed that there is a reactive, not proactive response to supporting children's mental health; that the situation must get 'bad enough' to tip the balance to seek help.
We noticed that mental health is perceived differently than physical health. Children are given clear messages early on about developing positive physical healthy habits, like drinking more water, eating their five a day, and staying active with the daily mile. But when it comes to mental health, there is very little proactive messages to equip children to face the challenges that they will inevitably encounter.
What if we coached children that worry was simply a natural response to something they had never done before, or something different?
So that we have children that expect to feel nervous if something new is coming their way; they expect to feel anxious and realise that they are simply out of their comfort zone because it is something they have not done before, rather than avoid it.
What if we coached children to understand that emotions are just signals to guide rather than being good or bad?
So that children understand their feelings and emotions, have healthy boundaries, and know when someone has overstepped what feels ok for them.
What if we coached children that the only thing, they could have complete control over is their own feelings, responses, actions, and reactions?
So that children don't waste their time and energy worrying about something they could never control, like ill-health, spoiled plans, or other people's unkindness.
What if we coached children that they had beliefs about their abilities, but these were not the truth, and that they could be changed and rewritten?
So that we could give children the gift of living a life without limits.
Suppose we support children to develop soft skills, emotional intelligence, confidence, and resilience so that they are prepared for any challenge that comes their way. As adults, we know that the challenges are coming, they are inevitable, but if the children already had their resilience tool kit, what difference could that make?
We want to flip the script. We all have mental health. It's not good or bad. We want to encourage all children to develop mental strength - which is infinite.
Step 1 We Share When we share a story together you make a unique and special connection between story-teller and listener.
Step 2 We Reflect on the wisdom, insights, thoughts and feelings the story has stirred up.
Step 3 We Explore new ideas and concepts and consider different perspectives.
Step 4 We Experiment by taking all this new learning and trying out new ideas, strategies, tools and beliefs to see what ones work best for us.
Step 5 We Prepare for when we will use these new skills. Developing new patterns of behaviour or new ways of thinking can feel different at first, that is why we must plan and prepare for the next tricky time or the next opportunity, to put our new skills into action.
Step 6 We Practice as we always say practice make progress! We want to keep practicing until the new learning, tools and strategies are familiar and easy to use.
When we have worked with children through all 6 steps they can be proud to say
"I'm Wise for my Size"
We knew that to create this coaching program and a new way of framing mental strength, it had to have certain elements. It had to be child-friendly, fun, engaging, non-threatening, and non-stigmatizing.
The benefit s of reading to children are well established, children love to be read a story, and therefore stories became an easy choice as the first step in the Wise for My Size process.
So without begging, preaching, or nagging, a story can change perceptions and plant ideas. Helping the child see a challenge in a new way and from a new perspective.
Karen Gunn
Some of you might be familiar with coaching, for some, this might be a completely new idea. Let's examine some definitions and distinctions and how we work with children.
Pure coaching would be from the assumption that the coachee has all the resources they need inside of them to find a solution or the answer they seek, it is the role of the Coach to use coaching techniques, such as active listening and questioning, to unlock that internal wisdom.
But as we are coaching children, our approach must include an element of teaching to introduce new concepts, skills, and techniques. This creates a very safe space to practice these skills before the child uses them in real-life situations, and the way we do this is through stories, activities, and the power of the imagination.
We are always coaching the child in front of us and always waiting for them to have their own eureka moment. So, we are not forcing them along a path or wanting them to get something just because we have decided to coach them around it.
We allow them to have their own eureka moment because that is when you get the powerful transformation, one that will last a lifetime.

This fee allows you to;
Our course has 4 phases each can be worked through at a pace that feels right for you. Here we have tried to illustrate the time required to complete all of the elements and where you could speed up and what might hold you back a little (forewarned is forearmed as they say).
Phase one One-line training.
There are 11 modules for you to work through adding up to 8 hours of learning. Each module has an average of 12 lessons which you can watch or listen to depending on your learning style preference.
Some of our coaches have worked through this part of the training in two weeks fitting in the learning on their work commute or when on ‘child taxi service’ in the evenings, others have made regular time each week and completed the one-line learning element over a couple of months. How you complete this part of the course will be up to you.
Phase two In-person training
This is a transformational 3 days where you get to start applying the theory gained within phase one. The days are a combination of lectures, case studies, practical elements, coaching skills acquisition, and preparation for the practical element in phase three. We know as busy parents ourselves getting away for 3 days can seem like an enormous ask but we promise you that it will be more than worth it.
At the moment, we are offering the in-person training 3 times a year. Please refer to the main website page for up-to-date details.
Phase three Coaching Practical
Once you have completed the in-person training, you will be allowed to use our Wise for My Size resources with a limited number of practice clients as you work towards completing your certification.
The aims of working with practice clients are;
Your practical will consist of working with individual clients and a small group setting over an 8-week coaching program. For those wanting to use the Wise for My Size methodology within their current role within the classroom there is a case study option.
If you can do all 3 practical sessions at the same time the length of this part of the course could take you as little as 8 weeks. From experience our coaches have opted to stagger the start of their practical either starting their group first and then the individual sessions a couple of weeks later. We have also found that with school holidays some practical sessions have take 10 weeks or more to deliver all 8 coaching sessions.
Phase four Assessment and Evaluation
We always encourage you to complete the work for your evaluation as you go along as it makes this part seamless and stress free. Your submissions will include your recordings, reflections and case studies. There is also a short open book exam that tests your theory knowledge. Once you have submitted all elements to Wise for My Size HQ you can expect to get your results within 2 to 3 weeks.
So in summary if you are super focused and want to complete your certification as quickly as possible you could do so within 4 months but you do have up to 3 years to complete your training – as we know life happens.
From our experience so far it has taken our coaches an average of 6 months to complete the certification course.
Our coaching materials are suitable for children aged 7 to 16 years. We do of course show how to adapt your approach to this diverse age range. Importantly consider what age group of children you want to coach, not everyone enjoys working with very young children, and likewise not everyone enjoys working with teenagers, you can pick the age group you feel most comfortable coaching
Yes if you choose to work privately, you will be self-employed once you have your license this is not a job it is a training certification.
Some coaches complete their certification and work within their current employment, for example a class teacher may complete the training and then offer Wise for my Size groups within their school or a charity worker may offer coaching sessions within their charity on this basis they will stay employed and deliver the Wise for my Size materials in house.
You will need an Enhanced Disclosure/DBS check as you are working with children. If you do not have a up-to-date check we can signpost you to Organisations who will do this for you for a small fee.
You will require to be insured prior to starting your practical sessions
